THE STORY OF BEAUTY
Hydrangea is a flowering shrub native to regions including Japan, and has long been cherished in Japan as a flower that symbolizes the rainy season.
In Japan, hydrangea has appeared in gardens and literature for centuries. Its flowers, deepening in color as they become wet with rain, have been loved for the way they evoke the quiet beauty of the changing seasons.
The Japanese name “ajisai” is believed to derive from the old name “ajisai” or “adzusai,” with one interpretation connecting “adzu” to gathering and “sai” to indigo blue. The name is thought to evoke the way its many small flowers gather together to form a single beautiful bloom.
The scientific name *Hydrangea* comes from the Greek words “hydor,” meaning “water,” and “angeion,” meaning “vessel” or “container,” giving it the meaning “water vessel.” This name is thought to reflect both the plant’s need for abundant water and the cup-like form of its flowers.
After being introduced from Japan to Europe, hydrangea became widely cultivated in European gardens from the 19th century onward, where it was admired for its rich colors and graceful form.
In particular, many varieties were cultivated as ornamental plants to enhance gardens, and the beauty of hydrangeas in shades of blue, purple, pink, and white became widely appreciated.
Hydrangea is also known for changing its flower color depending on the nature of the soil and its growing environment. The way the same flower can reveal different expressions according to its surroundings is one of the remarkable beauties of hydrangea.
Thus, hydrangea has been cherished in different cultural landscapes—as a flower closely associated with the rainy season in Japan and as an elegant garden flower in Europe—continuing to captivate people around the world with its ever-changing beauty.

BEAUTY OF HAPPINESS
Hydrangea teaches us the beauty of accepting ourselves as we change.
At times, change can make us feel uncertain.
Becoming different from who we were yesterday.
Entering a new environment.
Seeing something we once cherished in a different way.
Yet hydrangea never remains in a single color. As the season unfolds, its appearance gradually transforms.
Its flowers may begin in delicate shades, deepening in color with time. Even when growing in the same place, they can reveal different colors depending on the soil and their surrounding environment.
Looking at hydrangea, we may begin to feel that beauty is not about remaining unchanged, but about discovering our own beauty as we grow and transform through each season of life.
Our lives, too, have many different seasons.
There are times when things do not unfold as we hoped.
Times of great change.
And times when we discover a beauty within ourselves that we could never have imagined before.
Change does not always mean losing something.
Sometimes, it is a quiet passage of time that allows us to meet a new version of ourselves.
Hydrangea beautifully changes its colors even through the rainy season, gently reminding us that transformation itself can become a form of beauty.

QUESTION FOR YOU
What is beginning to change within you lately?
It may be the way you see things.
It may be a relationship with someone or something.
Or perhaps it is the way you see yourself, now that you are no longer quite the same person you once were.
When we are in the midst of change, we may not immediately understand what it means.
Yet when we look back with time, we may come to realize that it was because of those changes that we became who we are today.
Just as hydrangeas gradually change their colors as they receive the rain, we, too, quietly transform within the environments and seasons of our lives.
Express and cherish the color that belongs only to you today, just as it is.
Within it, there may be a beauty you have not yet discovered, quietly taking shape.
