Gloriosa Superba (Climbing Lily) — Pierre Joseph Redouté, France, ca. 1810.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
THE STORY OF BEAUTY
Gloriosa is a striking flower, known for its vividly colored petals that curl and turn outward in graceful waves.
Its slender, supple petals spread upward like flames rising into the air, leaving a powerful impression on everyone who sees them.
The genus name *Gloriosa* comes from the Latin word *gloriosus*, meaning “glorious” or “full of glory.”
True to its name, the flower possesses a dramatic beauty and a confident presence that captures the eye at first glance.
In Japan, it is also known by the name *Kitsuneyuri*, meaning “fox lily.”
The name is said to have originated from the flower’s uniquely curved petals, which are thought to resemble the face of a fox.
Within a single flower are two names born from different perspectives: a botanical name associated with “glory,” and a familiar Japanese name inspired by the “fox.”
Each reveals a different aspect of the flower’s distinctive character.
Gloriosa does not try to bloom in the same way as any other flower.
It bends its petals boldly, spreading them freely and transforming its unmistakable form into beauty itself.
Through its vivid and expressive presence, Gloriosa shows us the beauty of blooming in our own way.

BEAUTY OF HAPPINESS
Gloriosa teaches us the beauty and wonder of letting our own unique beauty shine.
At times, we compare ourselves with those around us and may underestimate what makes us unique.
Yet Gloriosa never tries to hide its curling petals, vivid colors, or distinctive form.
Beauty does not lie in becoming closer to someone else’s ideal. It lives in trusting what exists only within us and allowing it to shine.
Gloriosa gently reminds us that the courage to bloom in our own way can sometimes become a beauty powerful enough to move the hearts of others.
