A Carnation (“Hollandia Liberata”) — Zacharias Blijhooft, Netherlands, 1675. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
THE STORY OF BEAUTY
The Carnation has long been cherished for its delicate petals, rich colors, and sweet, spicy fragrance.
Its botanical name is *Dianthus caryophyllus*, and it belongs to the genus *Dianthus*.
Today, carnations are available in many varieties, cultivated through a long history of horticultural development, with a beautiful range of colors and flower forms, including red, pink, white, and yellow.
Carnations have also been represented in European art for centuries.
During the Renaissance, carnations were sometimes associated with love and marriage and appeared in portraits commemorating engagements and weddings. A figure holding a carnation could express hopes for love, devotion, and marital fidelity.
In the nineteenth century, during the Victorian era, the language of flowers became widely popular as a way of expressing feelings through floral gifts. This tradition, which spread from France to Britain and America, gave different flowers and colors a variety of symbolic meanings. Carnations, too, became associated with different expressions of love.
Even today, carnations are widely cherished as flowers that express love and gratitude toward those who are dear to us, especially on occasions such as Mother’s Day.
In this way, the carnation became more than a beautiful flower. It took root in people's lives as a flower that could carry love and feelings in place of words.
Just as its layers of petals come together to create one beautiful bloom, perhaps love, too, becomes something beautiful through the accumulation of small acts of kindness and gratitude.

BEAUTY OF HAPPINESS
The carnation teaches us the importance of nurturing and expressing love and gratitude for those who are dear to us.
We cannot always express our feelings to the people we cherish.
Yet, the time we have shared with them and the kindness we have received can quietly remain in our hearts, shaping the kindness and sensitivity we carry today.
The carnation gently reminds us to bring light to these invisible feelings of love and to cherish the importance of expressing gratitude.
